A Heartwarming Visit from Ex-Students

In January 2020, just before the world turned upside down with the pandemic, I had the joy of welcoming two familiar faces back to my centre—siblings Yoke Min and her younger sister, Yoke Xuan. This unexpected visit from ex-students was a moment I’ll always treasure.

Seeing them again, now older and more confident, was a poignant reminder of why I do what I do. Yoke Min shared how she had struggled with Organic Chemistry when she first joined my class. “I was so weak in organic,” she confessed, “but by the end, I actually started to enjoy working on those questions!” Hearing her say that was the ultimate reward—a student not only improving but learning to love a subject that once felt impossible.

Yoke Xuan also shared her reflections on how she struggled with Chemistry, reminding me of the determination and curiosity both siblings brought to class. Watching them grow from hesitant students into capable young adults ready to take on the world was humbling.

This visit wasn’t about grades or achievements; it was about reconnecting and reflecting on the journey we shared. It reminded me that as tutors, our impact goes far beyond exam results. It’s about instilling confidence, sparking curiosity, and helping students believe in their potential.

As I stood there chatting with Yoke Min and Yoke Xuan, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride—not just in their growth, but in my own journey as an educator. Moments like these make every late night preparing lessons and every extra effort to explain a concept worthwhile.

To Yoke Min and Yoke Xuan: thank you for taking the time to visit. Your stories inspire me to continue making a difference, one student at a time.
