Throwback to 2017: My Second Mr Khemistry Flyer

In 2017, fresh off the “success” of my first flyer (read: a few puzzled glances), I dove headfirst into designing my second Mr Khemistry flyer. The theme? Showcasing my credentials, again. After all, who wouldn’t be impressed by bold fonts shouting “Ex-MOE Teacher” and “Published Author”? Apparently, not as many people as I’d hoped.

Looking back, I can’t help but laugh at my enthusiasm. I thought the flyer screamed professionalism, but in reality, it looked like a CV disguised as an ad. Complete with a long list of achievements and contact details squished into the corner, it was more “job application” than “student magnet.”

This is the new flyer for Mr Khemistry

The results were… underwhelming. Not a single enquiry. Zilch. Nada. I began to suspect that my credentials, as impressive as I thought they were, didn’t quite resonate with students or parents the way I imagined. Or maybe they just didn’t want to squint to read my flyer.

But here’s the thing: that flyer taught me something invaluable about marketing. Credentials matter, yes, but so does understanding your audience. Students want to know how you can help them ace their exams, not just your career history.

Since then, I’ve embraced a more student-centered approach. Instead of listing achievements, I focus on what I offer—engaging lessons, proven strategies, and support tailored to their needs. Add more social proof with student testimonials, something which i didn’t have back then.

And while I cringe a little when I think of that second flyer, I’m grateful for the lessons it taught me about growth, humility, and the art of keeping it simple.

To anyone still designing their second flyer: keep going. Every misstep is a step closer to figuring it out.
